Peruvian Cacao – rich, earthy, naturally bitter and very far removed from ordinary chocolate 🍫🌿
Cacao is the raw material from which chocolate is made, but quality cacao has a character all of its own. These Peruvian cacao chunks are produced from cacao beans and retain the naturally rich, deep flavour associated with quality cacao.
Often referred to as ceremonial grade cacao, this style of cacao is traditionally prepared as a rich cacao drink and is enjoyed for its intense chocolate flavour, earthy aroma and naturally bitter finish.
Unlike ordinary chocolate products, these cacao chunks are intended to be used as a cacao ingredient. You can chop, grate, grind or gently melt them depending on how you want to prepare your drink or recipe.
Simple ingredient. Serious cacao character. And absolutely no need to pretend it tastes like a Cadbury bar. 😄🍫
What does “Ceremonial Grade” mean? 🪶🍫
The term “ceremonial grade” is commonly used within the cacao community to describe cacao intended for traditional-style cacao drinks and ceremonial practices.
It generally refers to cacao that has been selected and prepared with an emphasis on the quality of the beans, flavour and the experience of preparing cacao as a drink rather than simply treating it as a conventional chocolate ingredient.
🍫 This is cacao, not chocolate confectionery
Cacao chunks retain the naturally intense flavour of the cacao bean and do not have the sweetness and creamy texture people associate with finished chocolate bars.
In other words: rich, earthy, intense and unapologetically cacao. 🌿
Why Peruvian Cacao? 🇵🇪🌿
Peru is well known for producing cacao with a wide range of distinctive flavour profiles, from deeply earthy and nutty notes to fruity, floral and naturally bitter characteristics.
Growing conditions, cacao genetics, fermentation and drying all influence the final flavour of cacao, which is why two origins can taste noticeably different even when both are high-quality products.
🌎 From the Andes to your cup
Peruvian cacao brings a distinctive origin story to the cup, with cacao cultivation deeply rooted in the country’s agricultural traditions.
And yes, the journey from tropical cacao tree to your mug is considerably more interesting than the journey from supermarket shelf to chocolate bar.

How to Prepare a Cacao Drink 🍫☕
Break the cacao chunks into smaller pieces or grate them before preparation. This helps them melt more easily.
Add your chosen amount to warm liquid and stir or whisk until smooth. Plant-based milk, dairy milk or water can all be used depending on your preferred style.
For a richer traditional-style cacao drink, add cinnamon, vanilla, chilli, honey or another ingredient of your choice.
☕ A good starting point
For a first cup, 15–25 g of cacao is a sensible starting amount. Increase gradually according to your taste and tolerance.
Cacao can be surprisingly rich. Your first cup doesn’t need to look like you’ve melted down the entire chocolate aisle. 😄
What does ceremonial cacao taste like? 🍫
Expect a flavour that is considerably more intense and earthy than conventional chocolate.
Depending on the cacao’s origin and processing, you may notice natural notes ranging from dark chocolate, nuts and caramel through to fruit, spice and gentle bitterness.
Don’t expect hot chocolate from a sachet. This is cacao in its more grown-up form. 🍫

We wanted to tell you this cacao was gathered beneath a Peruvian sunset while a particularly spiritual-looking llama inspected every bean and silently judged our hot-chocolate technique…
…but we’ll stick to the facts.
So here’s the sensible bit:
⚠️ This is a food product and is not a medicine.
⚠️ “Ceremonial grade” is a term commonly used within the cacao community and is not a regulated medical or pharmaceutical classification.
⚠️ Cacao naturally contains caffeine and theobromine and may have a stimulating effect in some people.
⚠️ Those who are sensitive to stimulants may prefer to begin with a smaller serving.
⚠️ If pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, have a medical condition, or have concerns about suitability, consult a qualified healthcare professional before use.
⚠️ Keep out of reach of children.
⚠️ Natural flavour, aroma, colour and texture may vary between batches.
Cacao is naturally rich, intense and slightly bitter. That’s not a manufacturing error. That’s cacao being cacao. 🍫🌿
